11th Congress of the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology "Invitation to Ecology: Strengthening ties with Society"

The community of ecologists in Spain is honoured to inform you about the upcoming celebration of the 11th Congress of the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology, which will be organized by the Ecology and Environment Group at the Public University of Navarre (Pamplona, Spain). This meeting is held every two years and its aim is to promote an effective transfer of knowledge and main conclusions of the recent research in the ecology and environment field among scientists and specialists, but also among other segments of the society. This edition is focused on the necessary mutual acknowledgement between ecologists and the rest of society. Society evolves faster than ever, in a context of global crisis with deep ecological, economic and social roots, but also with opportunities for a more balanced development around a new green economy.

The meeting will be held in “El Sario” building, at the Public University of Navarre, in its campus in Pamplona (Navarra, Spain), from May 6th to May 10th 2013. It will host 11 scientific sessions covering a large part of the topics that are relevant nowadays in the ecology field. There will be five plenary talks by speakers of international prestige and impact. In addition, and as a novelty from other scientific conferences, there will be several activities open to the general public: divulgative talks, video and photograph contests and expositions. In addition, complementary activities such as technical workshops, field trips, etc. will be held pre- and post-conference, as well networking activities for the attendants. The expected attendance will be about 300 delegates (researchers, professionals, managers and graduate Ecology students) from all over Spain, as well as participants from Latin America and southern Europe. This number was exceeded at the last conference in this series (AEET 2010) held in Úbeda and organized by the Ecology Group at the University of Jaén.

The 11th AEET Congress´s motto is “Invitation to Ecology: Strengthening links with Society” highlighting the commitment of the ecological scientific community to facilitate transferring our message to society. An important reason for the lack of communication between both parties is, maybe, the significant lack of knowledge among the general public on Ecology and the work done by ecologists. On the other hand, it is not easy for ecologists to find suitable communication channels with the public. In this sense, the AEET is making an increasing effort to disseminate ecological knowledge and to increase awareness on environmental issues, both at local and global scale. We hope this Congress will be a boost to keep moving along this way, presenting the latest scientific advances in Ecology, and providing an opportunity to share these researches with society.

We believe that in addition to its obvious scientific interests, this event is also of the maximum social interest. For this reason we have planned a congress that in addition to purely scientific sessions, it will host a Parallel Open Symposium, focused on the relationship between Ecology and Society, open to the general public an without time overlapping with the scientific sessions. In addition, the AEET will organize together with the Centre for Environmental Resources of Navarre (CRANA) the 2nd Forum for Sustainability of Navarre, with the motto “Considerations postRio + 20 and the Green Economy”. Participants in this forum will be universities, local and regional administrations, businesses, NGOs and grass-root organizations, as well as individual citizens, ensuring the maximum interaction between the scientific event and other society sectors.
